Nonrepresentational or nonobjective art is not an invention of the twentieth century. A number of cultures, like the Islamic and Jewish, have developed over the centuries a high standard of decorative or non-figurative art forms. Today, abstract art is generally understood to be the form of art that does not depict objects in the natural world, but instead uses shapes and colors in a nonrepresentational or subjective way.

According to art experts, in its purest form in Western art, an abstract art is one without a recognizable subject, one which does not relate to something external. This type of ornamental art, without figurative representation occurs today in many cultures. As the modern abstract movement in sculpture and paining emerged in Europe and North America between 1910 and 1920, two approaches have been generally accepted to produce different abstract styles: images that have been “abstracted” from nature to the point where they no longer reflect a conventional reality, and nonobjective, or “pure” art forms, which do not share any reference to reality. A further distinction tends to be made between abstract art which is geometric, such as the work of Piet Mondrian, and abstract art that is more fluid, such as in the works of Wassily Kandinsky. It was Kandinsky who once said that “of all arts, abstract painting is the most difficult. I want to talk some about how poetry is seen in my opinion and how narrow the view of some can be when it comes to poetry and the worth and value it holds in society. I’ve heard many times by reviewers and critics and even booksellers that poetry books are hard to sell and that little interest is taken in the art of poetry by the general public but I beg to differ on these views held by so many in the literary world.

I feel poetry is such a unique and expressive art that has stood the test of time and as we look back on poets like Wordsworth and Dickinson and all the wonderful poets of a time gone by we can all agree that nobody can discount or dismiss the contributions these people have made to the literary world.

The Wordsworth’s and Lord Byron’s are still out there today working hard to bring back into the mainstream the powerful emotions and feelings that once struck a chord so long ago. These people are putting their heart and soul into their words and putting forth messages that they want to share with readers from all origins and backgrounds.

We should not put limitations on them by telling them their art is dead or that their art is not much of a selling point in society because it is and if it wasn’t we would not have so many poetry forums and websites across the infinite space of the Internet from nation to nation. One website I visited has over five million poets in their database alone so obviously their is an interest in poetry and it’s growing bigger with every passing day. It’s easier than you think. Just grab a piece of paper along with a working pen or a sharp pencil and begin writing your own genuine poem. While sitting on the couch or near the shore, regardless if you are alone or surrounded by strangers, poetry is one of those art forms you can explore any time. If you are keen to visit poetry readings and you are known for your love of poetry books, perhaps it is time to explore your own ability to express your feelings and inner thoughts through an unconventional type of language use.

Intellectual disputes over the definition of poetry and its distinction from other genres of literature were inextricably intertwined with the debate over the role of poetic form. As the twentieth century coincided with the rejection of traditional forms and structures for poetry, people began questioning the purpose and meaning of traditional definitions for poetry and its unclear distinction from prose. Poetry, throughout the world today, often reflects the incorporation of poetic form and diction from other cultures as well as from the past and present practices, further complicating the numerous attempts of scholars to define and classify what once was confound within the tradition of the Western canon.

Poetry depends less on sentences and particular paragraphs than prose. The major structural elements of poetry generally are the line, the stanza or verse paragraph, and larger combinations of stanzas or lines such as cantos. In addition, the basic units of poetic form are often combined into larger structures, called poetic forms, such as the sonnet. From Homer’s and William Shakespeare’s poems to contemporary award winning poets, language, rhythm, meter, and intonation have been studied extensively over the years in an effort to determine and classify poets, cultures and social times. It’s funny, being a songwriter myself, I always find that writing songs can sometimes be a chore. But why does it feel this way? Isn’t this supposed to be my passion? Isn’t this supposed to be something that I never get bored of?

Well, not exactly. Everything gets boring once in a while, even the things that you’re most passionate about. So every so often I like to take the lazy man’s route to doing things. And surprisingly, I often produce some very good results!

So listen up. If you newbie at songwriting, or even if you have been at it for a while — I’m going to a couple of simple tricks that will help you start the writing process within minutes.

Here we go…

1) Review a particular situation in your day. It could be at work, during your travels, or at home. It could be with your workmates, your family or your friends. Just any situation that affected you in either a positive or negative way.

An example of this would be “when you’re at work, your boss just keeps hounding you. But, the only thing that keeps you going throughout the day is that you know that somebody in the office has a crush on you”

(the above is a very dry example… but try to work with me here!)

2) Write down as many words as you can think of that relate to your situation.
